WinRAR
WinRAR is a trialware file archiver utility for Windows, established by Eugene Roshal of WinRAR GmbH. It can generate and show documents in RAR or ZIP file formats and take out several archive file formats. To permit the user to test the reliability of archives, WinRAR inserts CRC32 or BLAKE2 check parameters for each file in an individual archive. WinRAR supports generating encoded, multi-part, and self-extracting documents.
WinRAR is a Windows-only platform. An Android app so-called "RAR for Android" is also accessible. Associated programs include the command-line functions "RAR" and "UNRAR" and varieties for macOS, Linux, FreeBSD, Windows CE, and MS-DOS.
Features
·
Formation of
packed RAR or ZIP documents.
·
Unloading of ARJ,
BZIP2, CAB, GZ, ISO, JAR, LHA, RAR, TAR, UUE documents, as well as EXE files comprising
these archive presentations.
·
Checksum
(integrity) confirmation for BZIP2, RAR, XZ, ZIP, and 7z archives.
·
Multithreaded CPU
compression and decompression
When creating RAR
archives:
·
Provision for max
file size of 16 EiB, or 18 million TB.
·
Solidity vocabulary
from 1 MiB to 1 GiB.
·
Voluntary 256-bit
BLAKE2 file confusion can substitute default 32-bit CRC32 file checksum.
·
Voluntary
encryption using AES with a 256-bit key in CBC mode, using key beginning purpose
depends on PBKDF2 using HMAC-SHA256.
·
Optional data discharge
is delivered in the form of Reed–Solomon retrieval archives and recovery
volumes, allowing the rebuilding of spoiled archives (including the rebuilding of
entirely missed volumes).
·
Capability to generate
multi-volume (split) archives.
·
Capability to make
self-extracting archives the self-extractor can implement commands, such as
running a quantified program earlier or later self-extraction.
·
Support for liberal
NTFS file organization collections, such as NTFS hard and representative links.
·
Support for risky
path length up to 2,048 fonts.
·
Voluntary record
comments.
·
Elective file time
stamp conservation: formation, last access, high precision alteration times.
·
Optional file reduplication.
In
February 2019, a major security susceptibility in the unacev2.dll library which
is used by WinRAR to unzip ACE records was exposed. Subsequently, WinRAR released
the support for the ACE setup from version 5.70.
Self-extracting
documentations formed with versions earlier than 5.31 (including the executable
installer of WinRAR itself) are susceptible to DLL takeover: they may load and
use DLLs named UXTheme.dll, RichEd32.dll, and RichEd20.dll if they are in the
same file as the executable file.
It
was extensively stated that WinRAR v5.21 previously had a remote code implementation
(RCE) susceptibility which could let a remote aggressor insert hateful code
into a self-extracting executable (SFX) file being shaped by a user,
"putting over 500 million operators of the software at danger". Though,
examination of the claim exposed that, while the susceptibility existed, the
result was simply an SFX that transported its load when implemented; published
retorts discharged the threat, one saying "If you can find pushovers who
will trust a .exe branded as a self-extracting archive, then you can pretend them
into consecutively your trafficked JavaScript"
